A commemorative plaque – a life written in stone

A commemorative plaque is a life written in stone. We know well that when someone dies, the memory remains. We remember the sound of their voice and the touch of their hand, we keep letters and photos, and display them in a visible place. Friends recall their sense of humor, going to the cinema together. Now they come to visit friend to the cemetery… This is a life written in the memories of their loved ones.

Non omnis moriar, as the poet said.

Let us consider, however, what happens when a public figure, a social activist or a national hero dies? How can we ensure that the memory of this person remains not only within the circle of loved ones? What way can we remind this person? How can we provoke questions from children and tourists? This is the function of a commemorative plaque – a life written in stone.

What inscription on the commemorative plaque will be the best?

What remains of a person?

Which words should be carved in stone?

A life motto remembered by all his colleagues?

The kind words he had for neighbors and complete strangers? Or perhaps the sentence he ended every meeting with friends or co-workers?

Perhaps we can carve in stone the fact that a priest cared for his parish for 40 years, like priest Józef Woźniacki, whose image we did in bronze?

During designing commemorative plaques, we often listen to extraordinary stories. We try to capture that “something.” A single sentence or sometimes even a word…

Bronze or stone commemorative plaque?

In our studio, we create bronze and stone commemorative plaques, as well as combine these materials, as you can see in the photo below. The choice of material for a commemorative plaque depends on the client’s decision and the location.

Granite commemorative plaques.

A granite memorial plaque is a popular choice for commemorating a deceased person. They can be decorated with not only inscriptions but also with images.

These plaques can be installed both indoors and outdoors.

Granite doesn’t have to be limited to just granite. In some projects, we combine different materials. In the photo below, we combined a granite with cast bronze elements.

The plaque was prepared for a specially prepared stone. It is placed outdoors. Design and realization by our studio.

This method of commemorating the project allows for the use of a communication space (or) to create a place for reflection and contemplation. The space around the stone allows to come closer and read the inscription, but also there is a place for the flowers and candles.

A bronze commemorative plaque is a small (or quite large) work of sculptural art.

We especially encourage clients who wish to display photos or intricate inscriptions on the plaque to choose a bronze plaque. The reason is because that technique allows to make the finest details.

Bronze plaques can be placed indoors and outdoors. Over time, bronze can develop a natural patina, which makes it even more beautiful. Properly protected, bronze is a material for years.

How to order a commemorative plaque?

What should you know before ordering a commemorative plaque?

For the commemorative plaque design meeting, please prepare some information:

  • Place of installation. We have to know, if the plaque will be located indoors or outdoors. Please give us an information, whether the plaque will be exposed to rain or sun. This will allow us to choose the right material.
  • Exact location. During the design process, we consider the style of the building, existing commemorative plaques, and the requirements of the General Conservator of Historical Monuments.
  • Plaque size and minimum viewing distance. In some situations, it’s better to chose less text and a larger font.
  • Plaque shape. We tailor the shape and dimensions of the commemorative plaque to the client’s requirements. We also consider the requirements of the General Conservator of Historical Monuments or city architect.
  • Vision. Please prepare a proposal for the inscription, graphic elements, and photos. We are flexible. Sometimes we suggest which elements should be on the plaque and which can be omitted. We have many years of experience designing commemorative plaques. We understand that the initial design of the plaque will require approval. During all design stages, we consult with you on all steps.

How much does a commemorative plaque cost?

The total cost of a commemorative plaque includes:

  • the type of material from which the plaque will be made,
  • the size and shape of the plaque,
  • the amount of text and graphic elements, and the sculptural forms.

We also recommend reliquaries, which can be viewed in our store.
