How to start a sculpture of Divine Mercy?

How to start a sculpture of Divine Mercy? We are sculptors, so this is normal question. We sometimes receive a commission to create a sculpture of Divine Mercy. Sometimes it’s a bas-relief placed above the main entrance to a church, other times a statue of the Merciful Jesus. It depends on the investor’s idea.

A role model for us is the image of the Merciful Jesus, which is one of the most famous images of Jesus in the history of the Church, so it should be easy. But what is it really like? What does Mercy look like through the eyes of an artist, and how does it differ from Mercy according to the Best Sculptor?

A sculpture of Divine Mercy requires many small gestures and actions.

We start with a design. To create a design for a sculpture of the Merciful Jesus (or any other sculpture), we must plan and carry out many activities. Divine Mercy is a great mystery. This requires time for reflection, many sketches, and often small models. From fragments of time and a pencil, the Whole emerges.

Divine Mercy requires inner strength and confidence.

The base of every large sculpture is metal. Clay alone is not enough. A sculpture without a strong internal structure will simply fall apart. Only a properly designed structure will support that weight. This is the next task of the sculptor.

Mercy requires time.

Applying clay to the structure is a difficult and labor-intensive stage of work. The clay cannot wait. It must be regularly moistened. We make the shape and smooth the clay with special tools. We finish when every crease of the garment, every hair, and every imperfection of the skin looks as we planned. Then we can move on to the next stage.

Mercy requires work.

Mercy is hard work. Making the cast. Caring for what’s inside. Removing what’s unnecessary. Smoothing the surface. We can finally feel joy when we see our bas-relief in the adoration chapel or the Merciful Jesus on the facade of the church (on the picture below is the Parish of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Mikołajowice).

Mercy through the eyes of the Best Sculptor

How does the Merciful Jesus look at us?

When the Best Sculptor looks at a man, he knows what beauty lies within. He doesn’t see a block of marble or shapeless clay, because created them so wonderfully… God loves them with a great love. He dreams of abundance of graces for the people. However, he leaves the man to choose his own tools and the path, and he waits… Always ready to give a hand and offer much more than you ever thought.

When do we need Mercy?

People make various choices in life, which they believe are right. Sometimes they carve a shiny and smooth fragment of their image. Other times, man hits too hard and breaks off a fragment of a finger or even an entire hand from his sculpture of life. These are the moments when it seems like all possibilities have run out, love ends, life is ruined… Now we need Mercy.

How does Mercy work?

When you trust and give yourself into the hands of the Merciful Jesus, His gentle and strong hands will sculpt you until you become excellent. Even those parts of your life that seemed broken, will take on heavenly beauty under His hands.

This is how the Best Sculptor sees you.
