Josephine Bakhita dedicated herself to the Blessed Virgin Mary. She received the medal and blue ribbon of the Daughters of Mary, which is why we have depicted her on the reliquary with the medal around her neck. With her right hand, Bakhita gently touches the medal, and her face bears a soft smile.
This is not the only symbol on the reliquary. The figure of Bakhita is surrounded by chains symbolizing slavery. The chains are broken, yet they remain on her figure, just as the memory of slavery stayed with her for the rest of her life. The reliquary also features a bouquet of flowers, visible on both the front and the back, along with the inscription “Sancta Bakhita”. The relic holder is placed above the bouquet of flowers that the saint holds in her left hand.
